The Ultimate Guide To An Awesome Date Night Makeup Look

As I mentioned in my introductory post, I recently discovered beauty tutorials on YouTube! I’ve always been able to make my makeup look nice — but that was because I only used one look…the gold and brown smokey eye. That was my look. I never went outside of neutral brown tones with a touch of gold because I honestly felt like I resembled more of a clown than a hot girl if I used other colors.

It all started because of a tinder date. He sent me a DM that said - “Hey Kristen, I was wondering if you wanted to have a deep, open-minded conflicting conversation about the universe sometimes (alien emoji)” After a few nihilistic gifs and memes, I agreed to meet with him.

Thankfully, I had already started watching some beauty tutorials and felt ready to try out my new skills for a “date night” makeup look. But before I dive into that — let me tell you how I used to apply my makeup…and what you should NOT do.

First, I never used primer because my mom said it would give me acne. I would pour foundation into my fingers and use them to slide the foundation around my face. I then doused my under eyes with concealer, and added another powder foundation on top of it. It was really uncomfortable and honestly felt caked on…but I didn’t realize that at the time. I thought that was how everyone did it. Now for the eyeshadow. With my trusty naked palette in hand (the one I’ve had since high school) I combined the colors half baked, smog, and dark horse to complete my iconic brown and gold look. I would put eyeliner on my waterline, and mascara. No liquid eyeliner — because f*ck that. It’s like turning twins into distant cousins. Every time I tried, my eyes would look crooked and ridiculous. No lipstick, because it would get on my teeth, and no contouring. I didn’t even know what contouring was. Blush? Forget about it! My acne was bad enough I didn’t need more red on my face!! I realize now that this was probably because I had TWO full coverage foundations on.

Anyway...

Fast forward to me getting ready for this exciting new tinder date. (Men always tend to let me down but we still out here looking for love so…let’s dive into this makeup look.)

Step One: Prime your face

Priming is important because it makes your pores appear smaller and helps the foundation you apply last longer throughout the day. I have acne prone skin that is sensitive and has redness. They make color correcting primers for my skin type. I got it at the local drugstore. It’s a green tinted primer. The green actually neutralizes the red! It’s great because you don't have to put on as much foundation to cover the redness!

Step Two: Blend in your foundation

Ladies, let me introduce you to your new best friend. She’s called…the beauty blender. “Beauty Blender” is actually a brand, and their sponges can be kind of expensive. I use the eco tools version that I got at the drugstore. I don’t have a beauty blender to compare it to, but.. it makes my foundation look really nice and I have no problems! Beauty blenders work best when they are wet…so dampen it before you use it. Put some foundation on the back of your hand, and dab some of the product onto the sponge. Press the sponge into your skin in little-dabbing motions…don’t wipe. Start with your T-zone and work your way out. Only use what you need. You can always go back with concealer! Which brings me to my next step!

Step Three: Concealer

For me, I like liquid concealers over cream concealers. I make a triangle under both of my eyes and use the sponge to dab in the product. I put a little bit going down my nose, and on my forehead, and chin. Then I conceal any blemishes that remain. With whatever is left on my sponge, I dab that down my neck so my face blends with the rest of my body. (lol) Using a big, fluffy brush, I use a translucent setting powder to keep it all in place.

Step Four: Eyes

I used my naked palette but used different colors. If this palette is too expensive, you can also use the CoverGirl Tru Naked pallets instead!  I used “naked” over my eyelid, “buck” in the crease, “toasted” on the lid, “hustle” in the outer corner, and “sin” in the inner corner. I then went in with a tiny bit of black in the outer corner to seem more sultry. I still can’t do winged liner, but I did a little bit of liquid liner on top, using mascara to top it off. Thankfully, I have really thick eyebrows…so I don’t need to do too much work. I did brush them a little bit and used a brow pencil.

Step Five: Contour

E.L.F is an awesome, cheap, cruelty-free makeup brand that has two awesome contouring and highlighting pallets...for six...dollars!!! They are also infused with vitamin E. In the contouring pallet, I combine the lighter two shades and define my cheekbones. I put a little bit around my hairline and down my neck. Then I highlight the top of my cheekbones, my nose, and right above my lip. I like to go heavy on the highlighter because let's face it...it's fabulous.

Tada!! There it is! That’s the look. I used a tinted Burt's Bees lip balm on my lips because it’s winter and my skin is super dry. I went on the date feeling really confident. I had a lot of fun with him, and we’re still talking. I hope these tips help you to create an awesome date night look!
